Absolute Scenes
with Neon Soup
Every other friday, 18:30-20:00
Brothers Max and Alex (a.k.a Neon Soup) delve into the weird, wonderful and unique scenes of electronic and dance music.
For our final show, we wanted to pay tribute to underground music in Oxford. Both of us are hugely indebted to the organisers, promoters and stalwarts of the scene here who have enabled incredible performances from world class DJs and musicians just a few minutes from our front doors. Looking back at the wealth of talent who have played here in the past year alone made us realise how lucky we’ve been. Today’s mix features tracks and remixes from these artists, with melancholy house, choppy disco, acid-tinged techno and plenty more on the agenda (with no interruptions this week).
In addition, we are happy to share music from friends and producers here at Oxford University. Huge thanks to Noah Harrison, Harry Manley, Lvra, Diamond and Dysfunction for providing some superb tracks - we hope to hear more of your work in the future!

With seemingly few Chinese artists breaking ground on the international circuit, the underground scene in the world’s most populated country appears largely self-contained. This week we rundown music coming out of China recently which we've been impressed by with an eclectic, leftfield mix. Meanwhile, Alex stages a walk out after deciding the festival he had tickets for was more important. Will he be invited back?

Japanese ambient music from the 80's and 90's has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years with the help of a few record enthusiasts digging up, editing and sharing these long-forgotten gems. We sit down with Texture Magazine's Tom Graham and enjoy some blissful Japanese sounds, old and new. Sadly, technical difficulties mean our riveting discussion has had to be cut short after the first half an hour, but leaves the last hour decluttered for a more immersive listening experience.
Make sure to get yourself over to the Texture Magazine site and find them on Facebook, Mixcloud and Instagram for some premium underground music content.

For a few years back in the late 00's, UK Funky was an inescapable club sound. This week we explore the influences of this lively, patchwork genre and consider why the scene faded away so quickly. Meanwhile, Max attempts to fire his brother after his track requests go unanswered and Alex redeems himself with some, as he put it off-air, "proper skankers". Skip to 38 min for the contemporary mix.

Intelligent Dance Music, originating in the early 90s from a small community of British tech-heads, is certainly one of the more obscure and subversive forms of electronic music. This week we look back at the work by the pioneers of these enigmatic sounds before delving into some contemporary club relatives. Meanwhile, Alex embarrasses his brother with some serious IDM knowledge, Max doubles down on his challenge to Madonna and we reflect on our recent ‘endorsement’ from the Oxide Team.
